Solomon the Accountant – Edward M. Knauss
Rating: 4.5 stars
The short: A quick, enjoyable (and somewhat superficial) book rooted in the post-war Jewish culture in Toledo
The long: I don’t have much to say, to be honest. I had a good time reading the book, practically a relaxing experience during this week (all of them seem to be difficult in their own way). The book is about the titular Solomon who falls in love with Mollia, a woman who recently lost her husband. The book revolves around the development of their romance but also a few hijinks. The book affirms a positive message with no eye turned to anything except its plot and the Jewish community.
As an aside, I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish community (but haven’t participated in it since I was 13), and one nice thing about the book is that it felt authentic to me. I don’t have much experience with the Conservative community so I can’t swear to its authenticity, but this book conveyed the hospitality and friendliness of the Jewish community.
